One of the oldest standing commercial structures in Southeast Portland, the Barber Block was built in 1890 by
Edward Holman for his father-in-law, Henry Barber. Henry Barber was a leading Oregon pioneer and business man.
The usage of the Barber Block has changed over the years from a banking house, a nickelodeon theater, several
restaurants, a laundry, a furniture store, a hardware store and back to banking with the opening of Northwest Bank's
second location on November 16th, 2007. The Barber Block was the recipient of the City's first Urban Conservation
Fund loan. Restoration of the building has pioneered the creation of cooperative financing opportunities for historic
preservation.
Northwest Bank hopes to preserve the historical heritage and unique Victorian-Italianate architecture,
while at the same time bring a
much needed community bank to the Central Eastside Business District.
